As you drive the Hole in the Rock Road the Straight Cliffs are your constant companions -- the road runs parallel to them for 40 miles. They mark the edge of the Kaiparowitz Plateau, home to both Anasazi ruins and a large (and controversial) deposit of fossil fuel. While this entire area is popular with backpackers and hikers proper preparation can literally make the difference between life and death. |
