Fantastic hoodoos rise at the "Head of the Rocks" -- the vast expanse of slick-
rock which lies between Escalante and Boulder. The construction of the so called "million dollar highway" finally allowed direct travel between the two towns. An earlier route traversed the aptly named Hell's Backbone along the slopes of Boulder Mountain. Today the barrier of slick-rock is just a small part of our scenery -- to get the full effect drive the road both ways (or better get someone else to drive so you can watch).
