Doing business in Escalante Utah

Thinking of starting a business in Escalante? The first thing that you should do is find out where you can run your business and if it is allowable with the City of Escalante. If you are building, you will need to go to the Planning and Zoning Board to get your building plans approved and get a permit to build. Contact the city to fax or mail your building permit application at 435-826-4644 or escalant@color-country.net. Then you will have an address for your place of business for tax forms and state registration. You must also submit an application for a business license with the City of Escalante.  Contact the city to fax or mail your business license application at 435-826-4644 or escalant@color-country.net Or stop in and pick one up at 56 N 100 W in Escalante. Submit your application with a payment for the license fee, which is different depending on what kind of business you plan on, i.e., full commercial, home-based, etc.

Once you have your business license filled out and returned, you will have to be placed on the agenda for the next Planning & Zoning meeting to determine if your type of business is appropriate for the type of property where your business will be conducted. You may have to include site plans, or ask for an amendment to zoning if your property is not located in a commercially zoned area. If your plan includes a motel or other kind of business that requires more than one water meter, you will have to go before City Council to request an additional water meter, and/or a commercial water/sewer line hook up.

Upon approval, you will need to visit the web site link below to determine what kind of business structure would work for you, i.e., a sole proprietorship, corporation, etc. This web site also has links to forms online you can download, fill out, and fax to the Utah Division of Corporations and Commercial Code to register your business name and business type. It also has links to tax forms that will need to be filled out for a resale state tax number and federal EIN number.
